It was in the background of the tremendous pressure on forests and the unsustainable removals and the real threat of massive destruction of wildlife habitat that the Supreme Court of India intervened and played a pioneering role in its efforts to save India’s forest and wildlife. The Honourable Supreme Court has been ably assisted by Mr. Harish Salve, Senior Advocate in his capacity as Amicus Curiae.
It is hoped that this website of the CEC will make many more aware of the remarkable role of the judiciary who have helped and continue to help protecting, conserving and sustainably managing India’s natural heritage. There is a wealth of information on a diverse range of issues. We also hope that this website will be found useful by all those who are interested in ensuring the ecological security of India.
The CEC has been constituted by the Honourable Supreme Court of India with effect from May 9th, 2002 and presently comprises of the following six members:
